Learned to read

Enslaved, he was sent to work in Baltimore when he was 12. He wasn’t paid and wasn’t allowed to go to school. But, he did learn to read. He realized that “knowledge was the pathway from slavery to freedom” and he never stopped reading and learning. He said later that “Once you learn to read, you will forever be free“.
